Forests, wildlife under threat from Alberta oilsands rush

Home (CBC News) - The rate of oilsands development in Alberta needs to be slowed to protect forests and wildlife, environmental watchdogs said Tuesday.

If all of Alberta's deep underground reserves were extracted, about 13.8 million hectares of land would be at risk, according to the Pembina Institute and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.

The area amounts to 21 per cent of the province, an expanse the size of Florida.
