(IHT) - ALMATY, Kazakhstan: The government of Kazakhstan raised the heat in its struggle with a consortium of Western multinationals developing the biggest source of non-OPEC oil in 30 years, threatening Thursday to wrest partial control of the project from them. The Kazakh prime minister, Karim Masimov, said that the state oil company KazMunaiGas might need to share operating control of the gargantuan and problem-beset Kashagan offshore field with the Italian oil company Eni, which leads the consortium.
